Brunch used to feel simple.
You’d meet friends late in the morning, order eggs and coffee, maybe spend an hour talking before heading home. Somewhere along the way, though, brunch in Singapore became oddly stressful.
Now it feels like you need a full plan before leaving the house. Which café allows reservations? Which place already has a one-hour queue by 10 a.m.? Is parking nearby impossible? Did the latest viral café already sell out of its signature item before noon?
We’ve caught ourselves checking social media reviews before brunch more seriously than we plan actual dinners.
Then there’s the pressure once you arrive. Some cafés feel less like places to relax and more like content studios. People rearrange plates for photos, move drinks closer to windows for better lighting, and spend ten minutes filming coffee pours before taking a sip.
Honestly, We are guilty of it too sometimes.
The strange part is brunch is supposed to be slow. That’s the whole appeal. But somewhere between café culture, social media, and long waiting times, the experience became more exhausting than relaxing.
And yet, we still keep going.
Maybe it’s because brunch gives people an excuse to pause for a while in a city that rarely slows down. Or maybe we’re all still chasing that perfect café experience we see online.
These days, the best brunch spots for me aren’t necessarily the trendiest ones. They’re the quieter cafés where nobody rushes you out after forty-five minutes, the coffee is actually good, and conversations matter more than photos.
That version of brunch still exists, thankfully. You just have to look a little harder for it now.
